Danny Bonaduce says fan bit him on face

Timothy Norris / Getty Images file

By The Associated Press

TACOMA, Wash. -- Former child TV star Danny Bonaduce says a crazed fan bit him during an event at a Washington state casino.

The former "Partridge Family" actor tells The News Tribune of Tacoma the woman asked him if she could kiss him and then sank her teeth into his cheek for about a minute until others pulled her off.

Bonaduce, who works these days as a radio DJ in Seattle, said the woman was taken into custody Friday, but he doesn't plan to press charges.

His face had a bright red mark a day later, when he said what he was thinking during the attack, "Bath salts," he said, referencing a designer drug linked to bizarre and violent behavior in users.

Bonaduce's wife, Amy, says her husband was treated with antibiotics.

We can't afford to lose momentum on food ... - Ghana Business News

You Are Here: Home ? General News ? We can?t afford to lose momentum on food security now ? Kofi Annan

Page last updated at Friday, September 28, 2012 13:13 PM //

Kofi Annan

The Chairman of the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF), Dr Kofi Annan, has called on African leaders not to be complacent despite the success chalked up in the area of agriculture in the recent past.

He said it was time African leaders upheld their part of the bargain by increasing investments and encouraging public private partnerships to ensure that all farmers, large and small, contributed to ensuring food security on the continent.

?We cannot afford to lose the momentum in ensuring food security now and action is required from all governments on the continent and every partner to achieve this,? he said.

Dr Annan, a former United Nations Secretary General, was addressing the 2nd African Green Revolution Forum in Arusha Tanzania Thursday.

He said African governments must help farmers to expand their farms and to treat their farms as businesses.

He indicated that through the Alliance for a Green Revolution on Africa (AGRA) seven countries had been reached with 330 new varieties of crops while 380 hectares of land had been rejuvenated in the last three years.

Dr Annan said Africa could transform its agricultural sector significantly, if their leaders collaborated with the right partners adding that strategic change would only occur with result oriented partnerships.

Tanzanian President, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, blamed African leaders for not doing enough to ensure adequate investment in agriculture.

He noted that many African countries had failed to implement the 2003 Maputo Declaration which enjoined them to commit 10 per cent of their budgets to agriculture leaving the sector undeveloped.

Opening the ongoing AGRF, President Kikwete said though African leaders knew what they needed do to revolutionalise agriculture and help change the fortunes of millions of Africans whose lives depended on agriculture, they had not done that.

He said: ?We know what needs to be done, we are doing something about it but we have not done enough to support the development of agriculture in Africa.?

President Kikwete said if African leaders did not invest in agriculture, the much taunted agricultural transformation would be like ?a song without dancers.?

He said it was time for African leaders to adopt more effective ways of growing and developing agriculture on the continent to promote food security, enhance nutritional levels and create better living conditions for the people.

President Kikwete indicated that though most economies in Africa relied on agriculture, the sector remained backward characterised by traditional methods of farming, low use of improved seeds, fertilisers and lack of financial credits.

He said it was disturbing that despite the fact that about 70-80 per cent of Africa?s population were involved in agriculture, only five per cent of all arable land was irrigated in Africa.

Also he said Africa used only 10 per cent of the world?s fertiliser. The results, he said, had been small farm sizes, low yields, low income and poverty.

He said it was not surprising that about 239 million of the continent?s people were food insecure.

President Kikwete stressed the crucial need for African leaders to help scale up investments in agriculture by investing in irrigation, increase support for research and agricultural development and support mechanised agriculture.

He called on leaders to be responsive to the needs of all farmers, especially small holder farmers, to reduce poverty and hunger and enhance living standards.

The President of the AGRA, Ms Jane Karuku, noted that misguided policies and neglect had affected the development of agriculture in Africa and stated that the AGRA was committed to working to unlock the potentials in the agricultural sector of Africa.

She said subsistence farming should not be seen as an acceptable way of farming and that the AGRA continued to provide improved seeds and technical support, particularly for small holder farmers to improve their productivity and profitability and integrate them into competitive markets.

Ms Melinda Gates, Co-founder and Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said there was the need to improve agriculture in African countries if they wanted to see a change in the lives of its people.

Over 1,200 stakeholders in agriculture, including 14 heads of state, 23 ministers of agriculture, agri-business entrepreneurs and farmers are attending the forum in Arusha Tanzania.

The AGRA is an initiative of the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help promote food security on the continent.

The three-day forum being held on the theme: ?Scaling Investment and Innovation for Sustainable Agricultural Growth and Food Security would discuss effective ways to ensure food security on the African continent.?

Dish Network to launch satellite broadband service | Lubbock Online ...

NEW YORK (AP) ? Satellite TV company Dish Network Corp. is launching a broadband Internet service that's aimed at rural areas that don't currently get high-speed Internet.

Dish Network said Thursday that the satellite broadband service, dishNet, will start at $40 per month for people who bundle it with certain Dish's TV programming packages. The new service goes on sale Monday.

The company is targeting about 14.5 million Americans who, according to a Federal Communications Commission report, live in rural areas and don't have access to high-speed Internet. In all, about 19 million people in the U.S. don't have high-speed Internet service.

The dishNet service will offer download speeds of up to 10 megabytes per second. Dish said this is fast enough for typical Internet uses such as accessing social networks, music or video streaming and Internet telephone services.

The $40 per month service will offer download speeds of 5 megabytes per second. The faster service will cost $50 per month on top of a Dish TV account. Standalone Internet service without Dish TV will cost $10 more.

This service is available in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Shares of Englewood, Colo.-based Dish rose 29 cents to $30.70 in morning trading Thursday. Its shares are down 14 percent from their 52-week high of $35.64 in mid-March.

arthurts Site - Bring back your creativity | Self Improvement Tips ...

You need a 7 Day BrainwashI must be honest. There are some days when I sit down to write and I think there?s not a shred of creativity in me. Today, as I began, was one of those days.

So I thought, why don?t I tell them about that? How do you get creative or resourceful when it just doesn?t seem to be there?

Easy peasy, as we used to say at school. (I think we might have added ?lemon squeezy? too ? but who cares?).

I simply remember all the times I have been resourceful. I see myself sitting at my desk writing furiously, wondering how on earth so much time can have passed I?m on such a roll. I recall times when I was teaching, or explaining something passionately to my kids, or when I had to think up a plausible excuse to get myself out of a hole, or when friends dropped in unexpectedly and I concocted a meal out of a larder I had considered empty ?. the number of times any one of us has been creative and resourceful is huge.

Pretty soon, my brain is so full of ideas, I wonder if I can just keep to one a day. My posture changes, I may walk about, my breathing is different.

And you know what? You can do it the other way round too. If I change my posture, my breathing and my movements to the way I am when I feel creative, that old creative feeling comes back all by itself.

School Systems Blog - Four Gaming Resources for Learning

By: Aaron Morrison | September, 2012 | 125 views | No Comments | Posted in: Classroom Resources, Technology in the Classroom

Most educators view games as a way to incentivize students for good behavior, or to play during excess time in the class. However, using video games for learning purposes has caught fire in the classroom, and I don?t see it burning out anytime soon! In fact, MindShift just posted a video this week about How Games Are Being Used for Learning that I highly recommend checking out. Not convinced? Head on over to Mashable for another article about Why Education Needs to Get Its Game On.

The great thing about this educational tool is that you get to test it out yourself before using it with your students! Sounds like fun to me. So, here are four online games you can play?I mean, test out?before implementing them for learning:

  • FunBrain: More than 100 fun, interactive educational games and more! These games focus on developing skills in math, reading, and literacy. Ages preschool through 8th grade.
  • Arcademic Skill Builder: Teach basic math, language arts, vocabulary, and thinking skills with these games!
  • MineCraft: This game is a neat educational tool! You can find an example of how it is used in the classroom HERE.
  • Math Moves U: These video games could make practicing math habitual, which is not easy to do!

Lastly, Free Technology for Teachers has an article that provides some tips for success and lessons learned concerning educational gaming. It has some great insight: Video Games in Teaching.

What do you think, do online video games belong in the classroom?

NASA rover finds old streambed on Martian surface

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? NASA's Curiosity rover mission has found evidence a stream once ran vigorously across the area on Mars where the rover is driving. There is earlier evidence for the presence of water on Mars, but this evidence -- images of rocks containing ancient streambed gravels -- is the first of its kind.

Scientists are studying the images of stones cemented into a layer of conglomerate rock. The sizes and shapes of stones offer clues to the speed and distance of a long-ago stream's flow.

"From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about 3 feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," said Curiosity science co-investigator William Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley. "Plenty of papers have been written about channels on Mars with many different hypotheses about the flows in them. This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it."

The finding site lies between the north rim of Gale Crater and the base of Mount Sharp, a mountain inside the crater. Earlier imaging of the region from Mars orbit allows for additional interpretation of the gravel-bearing conglomerate. The imagery shows an alluvial fan of material washed down from the rim, streaked by many apparent channels, sitting uphill of the new finds.

The rounded shape of some stones in the conglomerate indicates long-distance transport from above the rim, where a channel named Peace Vallis feeds into the alluvial fan. The abundance of channels in the fan between the rim and conglomerate suggests flows continued or repeated over a long time, not just once or for a few years.

The discovery comes from examining two outcrops, called "Hottah" and "Link," with the telephoto capability of Curiosity's mast camera during the first 40 days after landing. Those observations followed up on earlier hints from another outcrop, which was exposed by thruster exhaust as Curiosity, the Mars Science Laboratory Project's rover, touched down.

"Hottah looks like someone jack-hammered up a slab of city sidewalk, but it's really a tilted block of an ancient streambed," said Mars Science Laboratory Project Scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

The gravels in conglomerates at both outcrops range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. Some are angular, but many are rounded.

"The shapes tell you they were transported and the sizes tell you they couldn't be transported by wind. They were transported by water flow," said Curiosity science co-investigator Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

The science team may use Curiosity to learn the elemental composition of the material, which holds the conglomerate together, revealing more characteristics of the wet environment that formed these deposits. The stones in the conglomerate provide a sampling from above the crater rim, so the team may also examine several of them to learn about broader regional geology.

The slope of Mount Sharp in Gale Crater remains the rover's main destination. Clay and sulfate minerals detected there from orbit can be good preservers of carbon-based organic chemicals that are potential ingredients for life.

"A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," said Grotzinger. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

During the two-year prime mission of the Mars Science Laboratory, esearchers will use Curiosity's 10 instruments to investigate whether areas in Gale Crater have ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech, built Curiosity and manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

NY animal hospice Oprah praised shuts amid lawsuit

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? An animal hospice once praised by Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities is shutting down as its owner faces a lawsuit from the state attorney general charging her with failing to file financial reports.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Wednesday that the Angel's Gate hospice, located 60 miles southwest of Albany in rural Delhi, has taken in hundreds of thousands of dollars a year from the public without publicly accounting for any of it, and he's seeking its dissolution.

The latest tax return filed by Angel's Gate chief executive Susan Marino is for 2008 and was filed on April 31. It shows Angel's Gate received nearly $1.2 million in donations between 2003 and 2006.

Marino, who ran the hospice for hundreds of chronically ill and crippled dogs and cats, also faces cruelty charges stemming from a 2010 undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She said Wednesday she's finding new homes for 180 cats and "a handful" of dogs remaining at the hospice.

"We're going to dissolve Angel's Gate," Marino said by telephone. "These past two years have been hell."

She said she's had "nothing but hate mail and death threats" since PETA posted online a video showing animals with deformed limbs, oozing sores and other ailments it alleged were left untreated by her.

"We have an auditor who has been working with our bookkeeper to get our records up to date," Marino said. "We're late in filing, but there's been no misappropriation of funds. Every penny went for the animals' care."

Donations poured in after Marino and Angel's Gate were featured on Winfrey's Chicago-based syndicated television show in 2008. In 2009, Angel's Gate won $50,000 in a competition sponsored by Rachael Ray's pet rescue organization. Marino also had an appearance on Martha Stewart's show and was awarded an ASPCA Founders award and a Woman of Distinction honor from New York state.

But critics accuse her of being an animal hoarder and shameless self-promoter who puts on a good face for the media while animals suffer behind closed doors. PETA's undercover investigation found paralyzed dogs dragging themselves around until they had bloody skin ulcers, animals with urine scald from chronically wet diapers and animals with respiratory infections denied veterinary care.

Marino said the PETA video was edited in places to give a misleading impression, and she denied any animals were neglected.

But Kim Serino, who worked as a volunteer for Marino before Angel's Gate relocated from Long Island, just east of New York City, to Delhi in 2008, disputed Marino's assertion that the money she took in all went for animal care. She said there was inadequate veterinary care and conditions often were chaotic and filthy. On Wednesday she criticized Marino for hastily finding new homes for the animals.

"The urgency to remove the animals is Susan's choice; it's not a good choice," Serino said.

She said the animals should first be evaluated for temperament to ensure that they go to appropriate homes capable of meeting their needs.

Marino is due to appear in Delaware County Court to answer the attorney general's charges on Monday. The criminal case charging her with 22 counts of cruelty to animals has been adjourned until Oct. 30.

Dr. Martin Makary: Staying Healthy in the U.S. Health Care System ...

?

Virtually every hospital has a doctor on staff that is known for practicing bad medicine but his peers don't call him on it. And the body count from medical mistakes made in American hospitals would fill four jumbo jets a week, according to an essay this weekend in the Wall Street Journal by noted surgeon Martin Makary.

Makary is on staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital and previously wrote the groundbreaking book "The Checklist Manifesto," which contained a series of simple guidelines aimed at stopping surgical mistakes and which were later adopted by the World Health Organization. His new book is "Unaccountable: What Hospitals Won't Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Health Care."

In his essay this weekend in the Journal Makary says there is a "disturbing closed door culture" in American medicine and that doctors in hospitals routinely cover up or ignore the mistakes of colleagues. As often as 40 times a week across the country a surgeon operates on the wrong body part, he writes.?

"Roughly a quarter of all hospitalized patients will be harmed by a medical error of some kind. If medical errors were a disease, they would be the sixth leading cause of death in America?just behind accidents and ahead of Alzheimer's," Makary says in his essay. "The human toll aside, medical errors cost the U.S. health-care system tens of billions a year. Some 20% to 30% of all medications, tests and procedures are unnecessary, according to research done by medical specialists, surveying their own fields. What other industry misses the mark this often?"

The solution he writes, is for health care consumers to become better at checking into the background of their doctors and for the medical community itself to hold each accountable.

Motorola Droid RAZR M torn down to its bare Kevlar essentials (video)

Motorola Droid RAZR M torn down to its bare Kevlar essentials video

Fall must be the season for surprisingly fixable thin smartphones. Repair part supplier DirectFix has posted a currently rare, video-based teardown of the Motorola Droid RAZR M that shows just how well Verizon's mid-range smartphone copes with surgery. In practice, it fares quite well: those unafraid of voiding their warranty can disassemble the Droid RAZR M from top to Kevlar bottom, replacing parts like the battery, cameras and flash with a minimal risk of damage. Not all is sunshine and roses, however. The display assembly is a single piece, which could be as costly to fix as it is easy to replace. We won't mind if it ever means dodging a full-price replacement in the event our RAZR meets the sidewalk.

Mwah! Kirstie gives Tom a big kiss on 'Dancing'

twitter.com

Tom Bergeron tweeted a photo of his big smooch after the show.

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The wait is finally over! For years ballroom fans have clamored for an all-star season of "Dancing With the Stars," and on Monday night, they got it.

The premiere episode of the season saw host Tom Bergeron welcome back the batch of returning celebs -- made up mostly of past winners and finalists -- for the ultimate "Dancing" showdown. And in return, one star gave Tom quite a welcome too.

After performing a surprising fluid and graceful foxtrot -- and after receiving some surprisingly tough talk from the judges following it -- actress Kirstie Alley put her 19 points behind her and found something else to focus on -- Tom's mouth.

In what has to be the longest lip lock in history of "Dancing With the Stars," Kirstie delivered one heck of smooch to the host in honor of his first Primetime Emmy award, which he accepted the night before.

"Winning an Emmy certainly has its perks! Thanks, @KirstieAlley!" Tom tweeted after the show.

At least that unexpected gesture helped cheer the crowd, who had been busy booing the judges for their negative comments over a mostly positive dance.

But while Len Goodman and the gang seemed unduly harsh on some of the all-star cast, they also had plenty of praise for others, such as their pick for leading hoofer hopeful, Emmitt Smith.

The former "Dancing" champ and retired running back took the floor for a bold cha-cha-cha with pro Cheryl Burke. Wearing bright green shoes that drew attention to his footwork, Smith reminded fans and the panel how much charisma and smooth moves he packs.

Carrie Ann Inaba told him he was "born to dance," while Len simply called his moves the best of the evening. The 24.5-point score (yes, we have half points now) put Emmitt firmly at the top of the leader board.

Of course, fans may find that they have a different favorite for the evening. If reaction from the in-house audience (and yours truly) counts for much, actor Gilles Marini could claim that spot.

Trailing Emmitt in the all-star premiere by just a half of a point, Gilles' nearly flawless foxtrot with an old-Hollywood feel established him as one of the ones to watch. In season eight, he barely lost to winner Shawn Johnson, and if his first posture-perfect dance is anything to go by, he'll give her, Emmitt and the rest of the stars a real race for the mirror-ball this time around too.

As for Shawn, the fresh-from-retirement, gold-medal-winning gymnast (and TODAY.com "All-Stars" blogger) hit the floor with Derek Hough for a smooth, if not classic, foxtrot.? And while she said that she felt she was cheating on season-eight partner, Mark Ballas, by moving to the groove with Derek, her first dance was evidence that the match could be a big success. After all, his strong suit is complex chorography, and hers is following it.

While head judge Len felt the dance failed to "look like a foxtrot," Carrie Ann pointed out that it fit the style of an American Smooth Foxtrot, and the judges seemed to split the difference in scoring, giving her a total of 22 for the night.

Other early favorites include Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryan, who delivered 22.5 points worth of hip shaking and pivots beside partner Louis Van Amstel with an impressive, if slightly intense, cha-cha-cha. And season-one winner Kelly Monaco also wowed with her unexpectedly scorching cha-cha-cha with Val Chmerkovskiy. Back in her debut season seven years ago, the ballroom bar was set lower and the show wrapped up in just six weeks. In fact, during her first time in the ballroom, Kelly didn't get around to the cha-cha-cha, making her 21.5 point performance even more impressive.

With so much top talent, the acts in the middle ranks might surprise some "Dancing" fans. Past winners and finalists -- such as Apolo Anton Ohno, Helio Castroneves, Drew Lachey and Melissa Rycroft -- all put on quality efforts, with scores grouped between 21 and 22 points. They're all close enough to the leading acts that a surge to the top of the leaderboard wouldn't exactly be a coup, but only time will tell who -- if any of them-- breaks out of the middle of the pack.

As for the rest of the acts, even one of those bringing up the rear had something to brag about on night one.

Bristol Palin's 19.5-point cha-cha-cha didn't reflect well on the leaderboard, but it did represent a massive improvement from the teen activist who went far despite frequently flubbed footwork in season 11. Sure, she still needs to work on her lines and on-stage personality, but when it comes to rump-shaking, she's got it down.

Actor and N'Sync alum Joey Fatone edged out Bristol point-wise with his 20.5 cha-cha-cha, and brought fun to the dance floor. But he'll have to bring better footwork and posture if he wants to go far. Maybe his playful rivalry with Apolo and fellow boybander Drew will help.

Pamela Anderson took the spot at the very bottom of the leaderboard with just 17 points for her problematic and oddly moody cha-cha. Carrie Ann offered the actress and former Playmate a criticism that she likely hasn't heard much of before: "The body wasn't quite there."

While some seasons kick off with a freebie week for the latest ballroom contenders, these dance-floor vets have no such advantage. The first elimination of the season takes place Tuesday night, and given the performances so far, it's hard to say who might waltz away in week one. If moves alone dictate that decision, Pam is a goner. But as "Dancing" fans know, it's not just about moves.

Fan base is the biggest factor in the early weeks, and we'll soon find out how that factors in this time.

Which returning celebrity brought the best moves to the ballroom on Monday night? Take our poll below and then share all your "Dancing" thoughts on our Facebook page.?Plus, join us on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. PT / 3:30 ET to chat about who you think might be going home!

Chris Brown Gets Another Wrist Slap

What a world for Chris Brown. Even though he likes to think of himself as a victim of the merciless celeb news machine, he has gotten off pretty easy on every level. I can?t help but still have some rage in me over the Rihanna thing. Yes, I know it?s been a while, and we are supposed to be a nation of forgivers. But it really makes the pill harder to swallow when you hear about him joking to women he picks up that he ?won?t beat them? if they go home with him. Here are a few things that get on my nerves: Being convicted of a violent felony without doing any real time? Yep. That?s him. He has yet to really own up to anything he has done, or even really act humble about it. He didn?t serve any real time. In fact, the judge even puckered up and kissed his butt over being such a model offender for the job well done while he completed his community service. How nice. Being involved in a violent bar fight while on probation? Well, this one is a little foggy. So far it?s hard to tell who started what, and [...]

Eric Schmidt Apple Maps - Business Insider

Google chairman Eric Schmidt was pretty candid with reporters in Tokyo about Apple, Android and Apple's maps controversy.

Schmidt said, "We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know? What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call."

Reuters was there to jot down the quotes.

The conversation shifted to Android and Schmidt said, "Apple is the exception, and the Android system is the common model, which is why our market share is so much higher." He added that the media is "obsessed with Apple's marketing events and Apple's branding" and so it doesn't write about the fact that Android is a bigger operating system.

"That's great for Apple but the numbers are on our side," said Schmidt.

He was in Japan to promote the release of a new Android tablet. As he played with the maps in front of reporters, he said, "Take that Apple," but quickly added, "That was a joke by the way."

Uh, huh. Sure.

Memories of the Luxembourg royal wedding

With just under a month to go until the Luxembourg royal wedding of?Prince Guillaume and?Stephanie de Lannoy, onlookers wil no doubt be reminded of the union?of Guillaume's?mother and father, the current heads of state.?

Grand Duke Henri married Havana-born Mar?a Teresa?in February 1981 and the couple, who met whilst both studying political science?in Geneva, went on to have five children.

Guillaume, who is to marry on October 20, is the eldest, followed by his 28-year-old brother Felix, Louis, 26, sister Alexandra, 21 and his youngest brother Sebastian who is 20-years-old.

Prince Louis and his wife Princess Tessy have also given the Duke and Duchess two grandchildren, Gabriel and Noah.

Whilst Henri and his Mar?a?have maintained a strong relationship over their 31 years of marriage, Mar?a?revealed that there had been some difficulty between herself and her mother-in-law, Princess Josephine Charlotte of Belguim.

When Henri's mother died in 2000, Mar?a spoke out saying that the two?women had never had a good relationship as Josephine disliked Mar?a's Cuban and commoner origin.

In October, when Stephanie, 28, will offically become part of the Luxembourg royal family, no doubt scenes from Henri and Mar?a's classic wedding will be in mind.

Henri and Mar?a became engaged in 1980?after Henri's father, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg, gave his consent to the union.?

?

The Luxembourg royal and his Cuban wife then married in February 1981?

In a church adorned with flowers the bride wore a classic white dress, with a long train, round neck and sleeves?

Henri looked dashing and smart in his military uniform. The Grand Duke had undertaken his army training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, in England?

The joyful couple stepped out on the palace balcony to address the crowds of supporters

?

They then shared a loving embrace?

Janikowski's FG lifts Raiders over Steelers 34-31

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Oakland's defense couldn't get off the field, the offense was unable to keep up with Ben Roethlisberger and starting receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey was taken off the field on a cart with the Raiders trailing by 10 points early in the fourth quarter.

Yet somehow they managed to put together a quarter in which almost everything went right, earning their first win of the season after nearly three games filled with mistakes.

Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 43-yard field goal on the last play and the Raiders scored the final 13 points after Heyward-Bey was knocked out and hospitalized by a scary hit to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-31 on Sunday.

"These types of games, in the past, we'd find some way to lose it in the end," safety Michael Huff said. "So for us to find a way to win it I think it's big."

In fact, this was the first time since 2003 that the Raiders (1-2) won a game they trailed by at least 10 points heading into the fourth quarter. Doing it against the powerful Steelers made it even sweeter.

The celebration after Janikowski's kick was in stark contrast to the pall over the stadium early in the fourth quarter when Heyward-Bey was knocked unconscious by a helmet-to-helmet hit in the end zone by Steelers safety Ryan Mundy that was not called a penalty by the replacement officials.

Heyward-Bey was taken to the hospital with a concussion and neck injury. But coach Dennis Allen said he was able to move his extremities and the team said he was in stable condition. Heyward-Bey was to stay in the hospital overnight for observation.

Carson Palmer followed the injury by throwing his third touchdown pass and Janikowski kicked two field goals to beat the Steelers (1-2) and get the Raiders on track after two losses to open the season.

"We kind of felt coming in we were already written off," Palmer said. "And we know we're a good team. We just had some unfortunate things happen the first two weeks and we didn't handle business and play well enough. We knew we could win this game."

The Raiders took over at their 25 with the game tied and 1:42 remaining. Palmer got the drive going with a 24-yard pass to Brandon Myers on third-and-10 and then hit Derek Hagan on a 17-yard pass down to the Pittsburgh 26 with 27 seconds left.

Oakland then ran down the clock to set up Janikowski's winning kick that sent the crowd into delirium less than an hour after silence overtook the stadium when Heyward-Bey was injured.

Mundy's helmet hit Heyward-Bey in the facemask on an incomplete pass in the end zone. Heyward-Bey's neck jerked violently and his head also crashed into the ground. Players from both teams kneeled in prayer as Heyward-Bey was attended to for about 10 minutes.

"We don't play like that," Mundy said. "We don't try to injury people or anything like that. We understand this is people's livelihood. We take that serious."

Heyward-Bey managed to raise his right hand while being taken off the field on a cart to go to the hospital.

Four plays later, Palmer eluded pressure and found Denarius Moore on a 6-yard touchdown pass that brought Oakland within 31-28 early in the fourth quarter.

"For us seeing him give the thumbs up, knowing he was all right gave us more momentum," Hagan said. "That really uplifted us and we came out on top."

Raiders cornerback Pat Lee then forced a fumble downfield by Pittsburgh receiver Antonio Brown that Philip Wheeler recovered at the Oakland 36. Palmer then drove the Raiders down the field and they tied the game on a 32-yard field goal by Janikowski with 6:30 to play.

With the Steelers missing Pro Bowl defensive stalwarts Troy Polamalu (calf) and James Harrison (knee), the Raiders were able to move the ball effectively in the second half.

Darren McFadden ran for 113 yards, including a 64-yard TD burst in the first quarter that surpassed his rushing total from the first two games of the season combined.

Palmer overcame an interception on the first play of the game to go 24 for 34 for 209 yards and three touchdowns, including a 3-yarder to Heyward-Bey late in the first half.

"They outplayed us defensively," Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark said. "Their defense made the stops when they needed to, and we didn't. It wasn't from a lack of trying. Maybe it was trying too hard."

Roethlisberger was even better, throwing two TD passes to Heath Miller in the first quarter, as well as third-quarter scores to Mike Wallace and Brown. Roethlisberger finished 36 for 49 for 384 yards as Oakland failed to generate any sustained pass rush.

But he failed to convert a third-and-9 under pressure following the two-minute warning to give Oakland the chance at the winning score.

Each team converted a turnover into a touchdown in the opening half with the Steelers taking a 17-14 lead at the break after Roethlisberger led them 64 yards in the final 1:54 without a timeout to set up Shaun Suisham's 33-yard field goal on the final play.

NOTES: Myers left the game with a concussion on the final drive. ... Hall of Famer Marcus Allen lit the torch honoring late owner Al Davis in a sign that his long-running feud with the organization has ended. ... Miller has four TD catches in three games.

Picking Ryan has done little to win voters for Romney

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mitt Romney's selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate has done little to attract voters to the Republican ticket and more think he is not qualified to be president than believe he is ready for the White House, a Reuters/Ipsos poll said on Monday.

Fewer than a third of registered voters, 29 percent, said the selection of Ryan made them feel more favorable toward Romney. But with 27 percent in the online poll saying it made them feel less favorable, Ryan's place on the ticket may have little effect on the November 6 election.

The results were largely split along party lines - with 46 percent of Democrats saying Ryan's choice made them less favorable, compared with 8 percent who said the opposite. And 56 percent of Republicans felt more favorable, versus 6 percent.

But Ryan has not swayed many political independents, the voters expected to play a decisive role in the election. Eighteen percent felt more favorable and 13 percent less so.

"Overall, he doesn't really appear to be impacting the top of the ticket much," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said. "He's still a bit of an unknown entity."

The survey was conducted September 20-24, a time when some Republican commentators have been pressing Romney's campaign to do more to promote Ryan, who is seen as a proponent of big fiscal ideas, like a plan to overhaul the government Medicare health insurance program for retirees.

The Washington Post reported on Monday that some conservatives think Romney's campaign has been too cautious by avoiding Ryan's big ideas and hoping that President Barack Obama will defeat himself.

Polls have given Obama a steady nationwide lead over Romney since the Democratic convention early this month. The Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll on Monday had Obama leading by 49 percent to 43 percent for Romney among likely voters.

"Obama's now been healthfully in the lead since the convention. If he can sustain this for another 45 days, it's done," Clark said.

BIDEN BENEFITS FROM INCUMBENCY

Forty-four percent of registered voters think Ryan is not qualified to be president, compared with 29 percent who feel he would be ready to step into Romney's shoes if necessary, the survey found.

A larger percentage thought that Joe Biden, 69, the incumbent Democratic vice president, is ready for the Oval Office. Biden led 43 percent to 36 percent, thanks to huge support among Democrats.

But more Democrats had faith in Biden, a former Delaware senator who is well-known as the incumbent, than Republicans had in the 42-year-old Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman who is chairman of the House of Representatives Budget Committee.

Among Democrats, 74 percent said Biden was more qualified, versus 8 percent who chose Ryan and 18 percent who did not know. Seventy percent of Republicans favored Ryan, compared with 13 percent for Biden and 18 percent who did not know.

The numbers were even among independents, with 30 percent each for Biden and Ryan, and 40 percent who did not know.

More registered voters have heard of Ryan than before Romney selected him, but he still falls short in national name recognition. Only 56 percent of registered voters said they were familiar with Ryan, versus mid-August's 35 percent.

Their opinions of him are split evenly. Forty-nine percent view Ryan favorably, versus 51 percent who don't, divided largely along party lines. Among independents, 48 percent view him favorably and 52 percent don't, the poll showed.

The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of 3.1 percentage points for the 1,313 registered voters surveyed and 3.5 percentage points for the 1,095 likely voters.

Windows 8 Chrome Uses Same Profile for Desktop and Metro

When Google released initial version of Chrome for Windows 8 we reviewed the comparison between metro Chrome and desktop Chrome we did noted that both versions don?t share add-ons, theme as if they?ve different profiles for Metro and Desktop, that?s true at that point. Few days back with Dev channel update things were changed altogether, one change we just covered is how to relaunch Chrome on desktop from Windows 8 Mode, another one is Chrome on Windows 8 uses single and same profile for desktop and Windows 8 modes where extensions or themes installed for one version available in other since they use the same profile. So the? Changes made to either of them will reflect in another, so some confusion has been avoided with this.

Are you happy with this change? share with us in comments.

Can Microwave Popcorn Cause Lung Disease?

Every microwave-popcorn connoisseur knows that the toasty golden aroma that billows into the room the moment you open a fresh bag is half the appeal, as important as a fine wine?s bouquet.

But can an unrestrained gusto for that moment cause permanent lung damage?

A Colorado jury has decided it can. Denver native Wayne Watson, 59, was awarded a $7.2 million dollar settlement on Wednesday (Sept. 19) in his case against a microwave-popcorn manufacturer and the two grocery chains that kept him supplied, according to CBS Denver.

Watson argued that the popcorn manufacturer Gilster-Mary Lee, as well as Kroger and Dillons grocery stores, should have put warning labels on their microwave popcorn, which he says is responsible for giving him a rare respiratory condition called bronchiolitis obliterans, also known as ?popcorn lung.?

The condition earned its nickname because it has been linked in the past to occupational exposure to the fumes of a chemical called diacetyl, which was, until a few years ago, the main ingredient that microwave-popcorn manufacturers used to impart that familiar artificial buttery flavor to their products.

A 2003 report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found a significant incidence of bronchiolitis obliterans in microwave-popcorn factory workers who regularly came into contact with large amounts of fumes from the chemical. And according to the NIOSH, animal studies have shown that inhaling vapors from heated butter flavoring that includes diacetyl causes severe injury to airways.

But the Food and Drug Administration classifies the chemical as ?Generally Recognized as Safe,? and before the diagnosis of Watson?s bronchiolitis obliterans, which irreversibly damages small airway branches in the lungs, no link between the consumption of microwave popcorn and the respiratory condition had been found.

Watson, though, was an uncommonly devoted popcorn consumer. He reportedly ate two bags a day for 10 years, and he has said that he regularly whiffed up the puff of popcorn exhaust that?s released from a newly opened bag to savor it.

In 2007, Dr. Cecile Rose, a lung specialist who diagnosed Watson and gave testimony in his case, wrote in a precautionary letter to federal agencies: ?"We cannot be sure that this patient's exposure to butter-flavored microwave popcorn from daily heavy preparation has caused his lung disease. However, we have no other plausible explanation."

Some major microwave-popcorn manufacturers have now stopped using diacetyl, which occurs naturally in the fermentation of some beers and wines, due to the possible hazards it poses to workers and consumers.

But at least one of the substitutes for the old flavor now in use, 2,3-pentanedione, was shown in a recent study to also be a respiratory hazard.

Apple patent application has iPhones text when calls don't reach spotty coverage areas

Apple patent application has iPhones text when calls don't reach spotty coverage areas

If you're already using Android 4.0 or iOS 6, you're likely familiar with the option to send a pre-made text reply to incoming calls you can't take. But what if it's your own call that won't go through, at no fault of your own? Apple may have that covered through a patent application that could keep the accusations to a minimum. If flaky reception at the destination prevents your call from connecting, the proposed idea has your iPhone automatically send a text message indicating that you've at least tried to get in touch. Recipients with Apple's hardware contribute to their own solution in this world: the message code is a cue to measure the signal strength and flag the location as a weak point in the carrier's network. Whether or not Apple acts on its concept is as much of a mystery as with most other patents, although we're hoping it becomes real. If anything's going to strain a relationship, it shouldn't be dodgy coverage.
