South Carolina Legislator Wins Two Races; Official Blames GOP

Tom Corbin was so nice, people elected him twice. The Republican state legislator from South Carolina was on the ballot for two races, one for the state House and the other for the state Senate. The difficulty is that Corbin won both contests as he was unopposed on both ballots. The reason for the dual victories comes down to a miscommunication and misinformation on the part of Corbin's party.

* According to The State, taxpayers may have to pay up to $24,000 for a special election early next year to fill the House District 17's seat vacated by Corbin in Greenville County. The Republican was the incumbent in the House race but then threw his name in the election for Senate District 5 when incumbent Phillip Shoopman, also a Republican, suddenly withdrew.

* Corbin told the media outlet he didn't withdraw from his House race because the Republican Party told him to do so would be illegal. However, Greenville County Election Commission Director Conway Belangia told The State the candidate could have withdrawn from the House race without penalty. The difficulty is that state law would not have let the GOP replace Corbin with another candidate because he switch races for "political reasons."

* Belangia cited Republicans "would have been between a rock and a hard place" by losing a potential seat in the legislature either way. Corbin told the newspaper he "did everything according to the law" as he understood it.

* Elections cost around $8,000 per county in South Carolina. If a primary and general election ensues, the tab to taxpayers is $16,000. If a runoff election is needed, the bill becomes $24,000.

* Corbin decided he would rather be a senator. He resigned his House seat on Monday.

* At least one Republican has stated his intention to run for the House District 17 seat. The Travelers Rest Tribune reports Mike Burns announced he wants Corbin's old job. Candidates can file for the post from Nov. 30 to Dec. 10.

* The special primary election is Jan. 22 with the general election March 12. A runoff, if needed, is Feb. 5.

* Corbin received 13,137 votes in the House election Nov. 6. On the same day, the legislator earned 33,491 votes for the Senate seat.

* Corbin credits his lawn mowing service he started at age 13 as helping him form the basis for fiscally conservative views he holds today. The legislator has been married for 20 years and has twin boys. He currently owns a rental property business. His wife, Leann, is a teacher by trade.

* The legislator was first elected in 2010 . His official state bio also says Corbin is a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Clearview Baptist Church.
